New 8Asians Article: 8Questions with Dr. Sandra Lee, AKA: Dr. Pimple Popper

Check out my newest article over on 8Asians.com

An excerpt from the article…

I admit it, I’m a popaholic and I’m proud. Not sure what that is? It’s a person who loves watching videos of pimples, cysts, blackheads. The bigger, the better. For a long
long long time, I never told anyone. I mean, once in a while, it slipped out. I’d show my wife a video that I liked. Her disgusted face was enough to reinforce that I shouldn’t share my love/fascination with anyone else. My wife is legally obligated to love me. Everyone else, not so much.

Come See Hello Kitty Before it Leaves JANM

JANM-HelloKitty-header

I’ve spent my last five years working on Hello! The Sueprcute World of Hello Kitty. I consider myself a Hello Kitty expert. See it before it leaves at the end of the month — only three weeks away. If you come when I’m at the museum (and I’m not in a meeting or busy) I’d be happy to walk you through.

Here is more information about the show:

The Japanese American National Museum presents Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty, the first large-scale Hello Kitty museum retrospective in the United States.

Organized as part of the global icon’s 40th-anniversary celebrations, the exhibition examines the colorful history of Hello Kitty and her influence on popular culture. Hello! includes an extensive product survey, with rare and unique items from the Sanrio archives, alongside a selection of innovative contemporary artworks inspired by Hello Kitty and her world.

Hello! is curated by Christine Yano, PhD, author of Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific, and Jamie Rivadeneira, founder and owner of the Los Angeles pop culture boutique JapanLA.

Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty is a specially ticketed exhibition.

We have a lot of great public programs, including a Hello Kitty closing party, as well. You can check them out here: http://www.janm.org/exhibits/hellokitty/events/

Big Trouble in Little Tokyo presents The Curse of Quon Gwon: When the Far East Mingles with the West (1916-17)

I’m super excited about this as well. The FIRST Asian American movie… and it was made in 1916. We’ll be screening it at the Japanese American National Museum on May 13 at 7 pm.

In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, JANM presents a rare screening of The Curse of Quon Gwon: When the Far East Mingles with the West(1916–17), a silent black-and-white film directed by Marion Wong.

The Curse of Quon Gwon is the earliest known film directed by an Asian American, and one of the earliest directed by a woman. Reflecting the filmmaker’s desire to present authentic Chinese culture to a Western audience, the movie features an all-Chinese cast and Chinese-style interior décor. The melodramatic storyline, which is typical of Western films from that era, is filled with romance and intrigue.

The evening will include a talk with Mai-Lon Gittelsohn and Dr. Greg Mark, descendants of star Violet Wong, and filmmaker Arthur Dong, who facilitated the restoration of the only known remaining portions of the historic film by the Academy Film Archive.

Pre-sale: $8 JANM and Visual Communications members, $10 general.
At the door (if available): $12 JANM and VC members, $15 general.

You can get your tickets here.
